The Stanford EPGY (Education Program for Gifted Youth) is an academic program aimed at high school students. The program lasted for three weeks, starting from June 22nd and going on till July 11th. It brought together people of varied backgrounds and ethnicities to a common academic platform.
The program I enrolled for was the Theory of Relativity. This program concerned itself with aspects of physics completely foreign to what I had previously learnt. The main focus of the program was to introduce us to the various elements of special relativity, general relativity and even some of the finer aspects of cosmology. (Black holes, to be precise) One of the highlights of the program was the opportunity to meet Leonard Susskind, a world renowned scientist in the field of black holes. However, the program was by no means merely academic. Our free time in the evenings were occupied by a variety of activities such as playing ‘Guitar Hero’ on the Playstation, trips to downtown Palo Alto and Ultimate Frisbee.(A sport which is taken very seriously at Stanford!)
The program was 3 weeks of enjoyment; right from the welcome barbecue to the party we had on the final night. The program not only gave me the chance to interact with people from around the world, but also gave me a taste of what life in University was like. The experience was made even more special by the fact that we lived on the Stanford campus! Clichéd though it may sound, the three weeks I spent at the program were the best three weeks of my life!
