The Duke University, in the US, held a Duke’s Talent Identification Program (TIP) at the Indian Institution of Management Ahmedabad in May 2009. Six students were selected from Cathedral and John Connon School to participate in this three week academic course.
They included Yohann Curmally, Raghav Mehrotra, Abhimanyu Shah, Sakshi Khanna, Ridhi Borana and Kunashni Parikh. They formed part of a group of 64 bright students from across India. The four modules of the course were Entrepreneurial Leadership, Engineering and Problem Solving, Forensic Science and Java for video games.
A holistic way of teaching was introduced with Power Point presentations, practical demonstrations and group activities. Each evening could be spent doing any one of two indoor activities or of two outdoor games. On weekends trips were organised to a museum or a theatre. Saturday nights were reserved for dancing. On Sundays there were talent shows, Frisbee matches between instructors and students, the Quad Fest which included a bunch of fun games and races and yes, ice-cream parties too! The overall experience was great and well worth the time spent there.
