Strategies for the Reluctant Reader
“A workshop by Ms. Vidushi Chaudhry”

The Cathedral Workshop team presented their last workshop for the year 2009 on Saturday, the fifth of December. Ms. Vidushi Chaudhry, special educator in the Junior School LRC, presented strategies on motivating reluctant readers.

Mrs. Ganguly introduced Vidushi and her work in the Learning Resource Centre.

In a colourful and engaging presentation, spanning four hours, Vidushi used a multisensory approach. A clipping from a Hollywood movie showed an adult facing reading difficulties and the impact it had on her life. This was followed by a clip showing the qualities of patience, listening, strength and expectation of excellence that a teacher must exemplify. Difficulties like reading fluency were shown by an audio recording of a student with reading issues, which the audience then analyzed.

Strategies for generating interest in reading were discussed and included choosing unusual content like comics, poetry, graphic novels and theatre. Motivational strategies, Assistive technology and holistic immersion or the whole-language approach were also discussed.

The efforts of the workshop team including Mrs. Isaacs, Mrs. Ganguly, Mrs. Pandit and Mrs. Shukla were acknowledged. The behind-the-scenes work of teachers, the accounts and administrative departments and the librarian were also appreciated.

The workshop ended with a vote of thanks by Mrs. Pandit, who urged audience members to use these strategies in their classrooms.
